Can I leave Black & Decker Versapak batteries in the charger for extended periods of time?

I bought a versapak-compatible Dustbuster and pink the batteries in the vacuum and charging even during months of non-use. The batteries are now darling and can't hold a charge for more than 2-3 minutes. I bought new batteries but can't find the authentic Dustbuster manual. Should
