How does a belt sander keep the belt centered?

I recognize that the drive drum is bowed in the middle. This would make me entertain the idea it would slide off one side once it started moving. Instead, if you force the belt off center, it recenters itself like charm.

I have been teaching turning to lower elated first youngsters, It has become thorny to leave alone teaching sharpening. I was not untroubled with them working with a wheeled grinder and the metal jigs. John Williams in the last cause c of "Woodturning Organize" #25 described his use of old belt sanders for lathe carve sharpening. So I picked up on his recommendation and came up with a choice that can strop most all tools.
